Notably, an inner ring has been meticulously inserted to elevate the gasket's performance while an external guide ring ensures precise centering on the flange face. The inner ring is crucial; it averts the risk of the gasket collapsing into the pipe during installation, shields the sealing element from extreme temperatures and aggressive mediums, fills voids between flanges, thereby preventing erosion, and minimizes failure possibilities. Typically crafted from the same alloy as the winding, the inner ring complies with the DIN 2699 standard (German) mandating it in all spiral wound gaskets. As per ASME B16.20 standards, inner rings are essential when using PTFE fillers and are highly recommended for graphite fillers. This design is predominantly used with raised and flat-faced flanges. The external ring adds radial fortitude to ward off gasket blowout and serves as a compression limiter.
