This Monel spiral wound gasket features a robust construction with both solid outer and inner rings. The inner ring is strategically inserted to enhance performance, ensuring the gasket remains intact and centered on the flange face. It prevents implosion into the pipe during installation, protects the sealing element from extreme conditions, fills flange voids to prevent erosion, and reduces failure risks. Typically, the inner ring is made from the same alloy as the winding and complies with the German DIN 2699 standard, which requires inner rings for all spiral wound gaskets. For gaskets with PTFE filler, inner rings are mandatory per ASME B16.20 standards and are highly recommended for those with graphite fillers. This gasket profile is ideal for use with raised and flat-faced flanges. The external guide ring provides additional radial strength, prevents blowouts, and serves as a compression stop. It is usually made of carbon steel, which may be painted or zinc-plated to prevent corrosion, but can also be made from alloys for high-temperature and severe medium applications.
