For enhanced performance, an inner ring is strategically inserted to boost gasket efficiency while an external guide ring precisely centers the gasket on the flange face. This carefully added inner ring is pivotal, preventing the gasket from collapsing into the pipe during installation. It also safeguards the sealing element from extreme temperatures and aggressive media, fills voids between flanges to avert erosion, and minimizes the likelihood of failure. Typically constructed from the same alloy as the winding, the inner ring aligns with DIN 2699 standards (German), mandating its presence in all spiral wound gaskets. According to ASME B16.20 standards, inner rings are essential for gaskets with PTFE fillers and are recommended for those with graphite fillers. This robust profile is designed for use with both raised and flat-faced flanges. The external ring not only enhances radial strength to prevent gasket blowout but also acts as a compression stop. Commonly made from carbon steel, which is painted or zinc plated to resist corrosion, the outer ring can also be fabricated from alloys for higher temperature and more challenging media applications.
