Enhanced performance is achieved with the inclusion of an inner ring, which plays a crucial role in centering the gasket accurately on the flange face through an external guide ring. The inner ring is strategically added to avert potential implosion into the pipe during installation, ensure protection against extreme temperatures and various mediums, and eliminate flange voids that could lead to erosion. Furthermore, it significantly minimizes the risk of failure. Typically crafted from the same alloy as the winding, the inner ring adheres to the DIN 2699 standard (German), which mandates inner rings in all spiral wound gaskets. As per ASME B16.20 standards, inner rings are essential for gaskets with PTFE filler and are highly recommended for those with graphite fillers. This configuration is ideally suited for both raised and flat-faced flanges. The external ring serves a dual purpose: it provides enhanced radial strength to prevent blowout and acts as a compression stop. For added durability, the outer ring, usually made of carbon steel, can be painted or zinc plated to resist corrosion. It can also be manufactured from alloys to tackle higher temperature and more severe medium applications, accommodating the demands of various industrial environments.
