The inner ring has been strategically incorporated to boost gasket performance and provide an external guide ring that accurately centers the gasket on the flange face. The addition of the inner ring is crucial as it prevents any implosion of the gasket into the pipe during installation, safeguards the sealing element from extreme temperatures and harsh mediums, fills the void between flanges to prevent erosion, and significantly minimizes the risk of failure. Typically, the inner ring is crafted from the same high-quality alloy as the winding. According to the DIN 2699 standard (German), inner rings are mandatory for all spiral wound gaskets. For gaskets with PTFE fillers, ASME B16.20 standards mandate inner rings, and they are equally vital for those with graphite fillers. This gasket profile is ideally suited for raised and flat-faced flanges. The external ring not only offers additional radial strength to avert gasket blowout but also functions as a compression stop. Made of carbon steel (painted or zinc plated for corrosion resistance), the outer ring can also be constructed from advanced alloys for applications involving higher temperatures and more severe mediums.
