This spiral wound gasket boasts a robust construction with a solid outer and inner ring. The inclusion of an inner ring significantly enhances the gasket’s performance by providing an extra layer of protection and structural integrity. The external guide ring precisely centers the gasket on the flange face, ensuring optimal alignment during installation. The inner ring, crafted from the same alloy as the winding, prevents the gasket from collapsing into the pipe during installation, shields the sealing element from extreme temperatures and harsh mediums, fills the void between flanges to avert flange erosion, and diminishes the probability of failure. Adhering to the DIN 2699 German standard, inner rings are mandated for all spiral wound gaskets, and ASME B16.20 standards require them for gaskets with PTFE fillers, while they are highly recommended for graphite fillers. This design is ideally suited for raised and flat-faced flanges. Adding further reliability, the external ring provides additional radial strength to prevent gasket blowout and serves as a compression stop. Typically, the outer ring is manufactured from carbon steel, either painted or zinc plated to resist corrosion, but it can also be made from various alloys to withstand higher temperatures and more severe operating conditions.
