This spiral wound gasket showcases an innovative design with a solid outer and inner ring configuration. However, the introduction of an inner ring elevates gasket performance. The strategically placed external guide ring ensures precise centering on the flange face. The inner ring serves as a protective barrier, guarding against potential gasket collapse into the pipe during installation, shielding the sealing element from harsh temperatures and aggressive media, filling gaps between flanges to prevent erosion, and minimizing failure risks. Typically crafted from the same alloy as the winding, the inner ring aligns with the DIN 2699 standard, emphasizing its necessity in all spiral wound gaskets, especially those with PTFE fillers, as per the ASME B16.20 standards. This design is particularly suited for raised and flat faced flanges. The external ring bolsters radial strength to avert gasket blowout and functions as a compression stop. Often composed of carbon steel, either painted or zinc-plated for corrosion resistance, the outer ring can be made from alloys to endure higher temperatures and more severe media applications.
