This spiral wound gasket features a robust design with a solid outer and inner ring. The inner ring enhances gasket performance and serves multiple protective roles. It accurately centers the gasket on the flange face, prevents implosion into the pipe during installation, and shields the sealing element from extreme temperatures and harsh mediums. Additionally, it fills the gap between flanges to prevent erosion and lowers the risk of gasket failure. Typically, the inner ring is constructed from the same alloy as the winding, adhering to DIN 2699 standards. For gaskets with PTFE filler, inner rings are mandatory according to ASME B16.20 standards and are also highly recommended for graphite fillers. This gasket profile is ideal for raised and flat-faced flanges. Furthermore, the external ring provides extra radial strength to prevent blowouts and acts as a compression stop. Usually, the outer ring is made of carbon steel, either painted or zinc-plated to prevent corrosion, but it can also be crafted from high-temperature alloys for more demanding applications.
