This spiral wound gasket boasts a robust construction with a solid outer and inner ring, enhanced by an inner ring that elevates gasket performance and ensures precise centering on the flange face through an external guide ring. The inner ring is a crucial addition, designed to prevent the gasket from imploding during installation, safeguard the sealing element against extreme temperatures and aggressive media, fill flange voids to avert erosion, and minimize failure risks. Typically composed of the same alloy as the winding, the DIN 2699 standard (Germany) mandates the inclusion of inner rings in all spiral wound gaskets. For gaskets with PTFE fillers, inner rings are required per ASME B16.20 standards and are deemed essential for graphite fillers. This versatile profile is ideally suited for raised and flat-faced flanges. The external ring imparts additional radial strength to counteract gasket blowout and functions as a compression stop. Commonly fabricated from carbon steel with protective paint or zinc plating to prevent corrosion, the outer ring can also be crafted from alloys for applications demanding higher temperature resistance and severe media handling.
