An inner ring is inserted to enhance gasket performance, ensuring accurate centering on the flange face. This critical addition prevents the gasket from imploding into the pipe during installation, protects the sealing element from extreme temperatures and harsh mediums, fills the void between flanges to prevent erosion, and significantly reduces the possibility of failure. Typically made of the same alloy as the winding, the inner ring adheres to the DIN 2699 standard, mandating inner rings in all spiral wound gaskets. ASME B16.20 standards require inner rings for PTFE fillers, and they are highly recommended for graphite fillers. This design is ideal for raised and flat faced flanges. The external guide ring offers extra radial strength to prevent blowout and acts as a compression stop. Usually crafted from carbon steel, either painted or zinc plated to prevent corrosion, the outer ring can also be made from specialized alloys for applications involving higher temperatures and more severe mediums.
