The addition of the inner ring is crucial, as it prevents the risky implosion of the gasket into the pipe during installation. It plays a protective role, shielding the sealing element from harsh temperatures and various mediums, filling the void between flanges to avert flange erosion, and significantly diminishing failure risks. Crafted typically from the same alloy as the winding, the inner ring adheres to the stringent DIN 2699 standard (German), mandating their inclusion in all spiral wound gaskets. For gaskets with PTFE filler, ASME B16.20 standards specify the necessity of inner rings, and they are deemed vital for those with graphite fillers. This design is typically employed in raised and flat-faced flanges. The external ring offers exceptional radial strength, preventing gasket blowout and functioning as a reliable compression stop.
