The inner ring's role is crucial as it prevents the gasket from collapsing into the pipe during installation, shields the sealing element from intense temperatures and harsh mediums, and fills the void between flanges, thus averting flange erosion and reducing failure risks. Crafted commonly from the same alloy as the winding, inner rings are mandated by the DIN 2699 standard (German) for all spiral wound gaskets. According to ASME B16.20 standards, they are essential for gaskets with PTFE filler and are highly recommended for graphite fillers.
