By incorporating an inner ring, the gasket's durability is significantly enhanced, providing exceptional stability during installation. This inner ring serves multiple critical functions: it prevents gasket collapse into the pipe, shields the sealing element from extreme temperatures and hostile environments, fills any flange gaps to avoid erosion, and minimizes potential failures. Typically crafted from the same alloy as the winding, the inner ring meets the rigorous DIN 2699 (German standard) requirements, which mandate its use in all spiral wound gaskets. For gaskets with PTFE filler, ASME B16.20 standards necessitate an inner ring, acknowledging its importance for graphite fillers as well. This design is ideally suited for raised and flat faced flanges. To further augment safety, the external ring offers additional radial strength, effectively preventing blowouts and serving as a compression limiter. Usually made from painted or zinc-plated carbon steel to resist corrosion, the outer ring can also be manufactured from specialized alloys for applications involving high temperatures or harsh media.
