An inner ring is strategically inserted to elevate gasket performance while an external guide ring ensures precise centering on the flange face. The inner ring mitigates the risk of implosion into the pipe during installation, shields the sealing element from extreme temperatures and mediums, fills the void between flanges to avert erosion, and significantly reduces failure probabilities. Constructed from the same alloy as the winding, the inner ring adheres to the stringent DIN 2699 standard (German) which mandates inner rings in all spiral wound gaskets. For gaskets with PTFE filler, ASME B16.20 standards require inner rings, and they are deemed crucial for graphite fillers. This exceptional profile is typically employed in raised and flat-faced flanges. The external ring provides additional radial strength, preventing blowout and functioning as a compression stop. Often crafted from carbon steel (coated to prevent corrosion), the outer ring can also be manufactured from alloys for applications demanding higher temperatures and more severe conditions.
