The inclusion of an inner ring serves multiple purposes: it prevents gasket implosion into the pipe during installation, safeguards the sealing element from extreme temperatures and mediums, fills voids between flanges to avert flange erosion, and significantly minimizes the risk of failure. Typically, the inner ring is constructed from an alloy identical to the winding, adhering to the stringent DIN 2699 standard (German), which mandates inner rings in all spiral wound gaskets. Under ASME B16.20 standards, inner rings are essential for gaskets with PTFE filler and are highly recommended for those with graphite fillers.
