The inner ring serves multiple critical functions: it prevents the gasket from collapsing into the pipe during installation, safeguards the sealing element against extreme temperatures and harsh mediums, fills the void between flanges to avert flange erosion, and minimizes the risk of failure. Typically, the inner ring is crafted from the same alloy as the winding, adhering to the DIN 2699 standard (German), which mandates inner rings for all spiral wound gaskets. For gaskets with PTFE filler, as per ASME B16.20 standards, inner rings are essential, and they are highly recommended for those with graphite fillers.
