This versatile spiral wound gasket boasts a robust outer and inner ring. An inner ring is meticulously inserted to elevate gasket performance, while an external guide ring ensures precise centering on the flange face. The inner ring is essential for preventing the gasket from imploding into the pipe during installation, safeguarding the sealing element from extreme temperatures and harsh mediums, filling the void between flanges to avert erosion, and mitigating the risk of failure. Typically, the inner ring matches the alloy of the winding. According to the German DIN 2699 standard, all spiral wound gaskets must include inner rings. ASME B16.20 standards mandate inner rings for gaskets with PTFE filler and recommend them for graphite fillers. This gasket profile is optimally used in raised and flat-faced flanges. The external ring, providing added radial strength to prevent blowouts, also functions as a compression stop. Commonly, the outer ring is crafted from carbon steel (either painted or zinc-plated to prevent corrosion), but it can also be made from alloys for high-temperature and more demanding medium applications.
