An expertly inserted inner ring significantly boosts the gasket's performance by preventing implosion into the pipe during installation. It protects the sealing element from extreme conditions, fills the void between flanges to guard against erosion, and minimizes failure risks. The inner ring, typically crafted from the same alloy as the winding, adheres to the stringent DIN 2699 standard (German), which mandates inner rings for all spiral wound gaskets. As per ASME B16.20 standards, inner rings are essential for gaskets with PTFE fillers, while also deemed crucial for graphite fillers. Ideally suited for both raised and flat-faced flanges, the design includes an external guide ring for precise gasket centering on the flange face. This external ring, often made of durable carbon steel—painted or zinc-plated for corrosion resistance—can also be alloyed for high-temperature and severe medium applications, providing enhanced radial strength as a compression stop to prevent blowout.
