To elevate its performance, an inner ring is thoughtfully inserted, coupled with an external guide ring to precisely align the gasket on the flange face. The inner ring's inclusion averts any risk of the gasket collapsing into the pipe during setup, shields the sealing element against extreme temperatures and harsh mediums, and effectively fills the gap between flanges to thwart flange erosion, thereby mitigating the chances of failure. Typically, the inner ring mirrors the winding's alloy in composition. Adhering to the German DIN 2699 standard, inner rings are mandatory for all spiral wound gaskets. According to ASME B16.20 standards, an inner ring is essential for gaskets with PTFE filler and is deemed crucial for those with graphite fillers. This design excels in both raised and flat-faced flanges. The outer ring furnishes supplementary radial strength to guard against gasket blowout and functions as a compression stopper, often fabricated from carbon steel, either painted or zinc-plated to ward off corrosion.
