An expertly inserted inner ring enhances the gasket's performance, providing optimal protection and precise centering on the flange face through an external guide ring. The added inner ring prevents potential implosion of the gasket into the pipe during installation, shields the sealing element from extreme temperatures and diverse mediums, fills the void between flanges to avert flange erosion, and significantly reduces the risk of failure. Typically crafted from the same alloy as the winding, the inner ring meets the stringent DIN 2699 standards (German) requiring its inclusion in all spiral wound gaskets. It is mandatory for gaskets with PTFE filler as per ASME B16.20 standards, and critically important for those with graphite fillers. This versatile profile is ideally suited for use in both raised and flat-faced flanges. The external ring offers additional radial strength to prevent gasket blowout and serves as a compression stop. Often manufactured from corrosion-resistant carbon steel, which may be painted or zinc-plated, or tailored from specialized alloys for high-temperature and severe medium applications, the outer ring ensures durability and reliability.
