The inner ring was deliberately added to elevate gasket performance, ensuring accurate centering on the flange face through an external guide ring. This feature prevents gasket implosion into the pipe during installation, guards the sealing element against extreme temperatures and aggressive mediums, fills voids between flanges to avert erosion, and significantly reduces failure risks. The inner ring, typically composed of the same alloy as the winding, adheres to the DIN 2699 German standard, which mandates inner rings in all spiral wound gaskets. ASME B16.20 standards necessitate inner rings for gaskets with PTFE fillers and highlight their importance for graphite fillers. This gasket profile is ideally suited for raised and flat-faced flanges. The external ring adds radial strength to thwart blowouts and serves as a compression stop. Typically made from carbon steel—either painted or zinc-plated to resist corrosion—the outer ring can also be crafted from alloys for applications demanding higher temperatures and resilience against severe mediums.
