This spiral wound gasket features a robust outer and inner ring design. The addition of an inner ring significantly enhances gasket performance by preventing implosion into the pipe during installation, guarding the sealing element against extreme temperatures and harsh mediums, and filling the void between flanges to avoid erosion. The inner ring, typically made from the same alloy as the winding, is crucial for maintaining the gasket's integrity and durability. According to the DIN 2699 standard from Germany and ASME B16.20 standards, inner rings are mandatory for gaskets with PTFE filler and highly recommended for those with graphite fillers. This profile is ideally suited for both raised and flat-faced flanges. Additionally, the external guide ring offers extra radial strength, acting as a compression stop to prevent blowouts. Often crafted from carbon steel, which may be painted or zinc-plated for corrosion resistance, the outer ring can also be made from alloys to endure higher temperatures and more severe applications.
