This spiral wound gasket is meticulously engineered with a robust solid outer and inner ring. An inner ring is strategically inserted to elevate gasket performance, while an external guide ring precisely centers the gasket on the flange face. The inner ring serves multiple critical functions: it prevents the gasket from imploding into the pipe during installation, shields the sealing element from extreme temperatures and harsh mediums, fills the void between flanges to avert erosion, and reduces the risk of failure. Typically, the inner ring is composed of the same alloy as the winding. In alignment with the DIN 2699 standard (German), inner rings are mandated for all spiral wound gaskets. According to ASME B16.20 standards, inner rings are essential for gaskets with PTFE filler and highly recommended for graphite fillers. This profile is predominantly used with raised and flat-faced flanges. The external ring provides significant radial strength, preventing gasket blowout and acting as a compression limiter. Frequently, the outer ring is crafted from carbon steel (either painted or zinc plated to resist corrosion), but it can also be made from alloys for higher temperature and more demanding medium applications.
