This spiral wound gasket, designed with precision and robustness, features a solid outer and inner ring. The inclusion of an inner ring significantly boosts gasket performance, offering an external guide that accurately centers the gasket on the flange face. The inner ring serves multiple critical functions: it prevents the gasket from imploding into the pipe during installation, protects the sealing element from extreme temperatures and media, fills the void between flanges to prevent erosion, and reduces the risk of failure. Typically, the inner ring is crafted from the same alloy as the winding, adhering to DIN 2699 standards. For gaskets with PTFE fillers, ASME B16.20 standards necessitate an inner ring, which is also highly recommended for graphite fillers. This profile is ideal for both raised and flat-faced flanges. The external ring provides additional radial strength, preventing gasket blowout and acting as a compression stop. Often made of carbon steel (either painted or zinc-plated for corrosion protection), the outer ring can also be manufactured from alloys for high-temperature and severe medium applications.
