This integral feature prevents potential implosion into the pipe during installation, safeguarding the sealing element against extreme temperatures and diverse mediums. By filling the void between flanges, it effectively prevents flange erosion and minimizes failure risk. Typically crafted from the same high-quality alloy as the winding, the inner ring aligns with the DIN 2699 (German) standard, which mandates inner rings for all spiral wound gaskets. According to ASME B16.20 standards, PTFE filler gaskets require inner rings, and they are equally crucial for graphite fillers. This versatile profile is predominantly employed in raised and flat-faced flanges. Furthermore, the external guide ring fortifies radial strength, preventing gasket blowout and acting as a compression stop. Generally produced from carbon steel, which may be painted or zinc plated to resist corrosion, the outer ring can alternatively be constructed from specialized alloys to withstand elevated temperatures and more challenging medium conditions.
