Crafted from the same resilient alloy as the winding, the inner ring adheres to the stringent DIN 2699 standard, a German specification mandating inner rings across all spiral wound gaskets. ASME B16.20 standards also require inner rings for gaskets with PTFE filler and highly recommend them for graphite fillers. This configuration excels in both raised and flat-faced flanges, with the dynamic external ring providing extra radial strength to prevent blowouts and serving as a compression stop. Commonly forged from carbon steel (either painted or zinc plated for corrosion resistance), this outer ring can be made from specialized alloys for applications demanding higher temperatures and more severe conditions.
