Its purpose is multifaceted: preventing the gasket from imploding into the pipe upon installation, safeguarding the sealing element against extreme temperatures and aggressive mediums, filling the voids between flanges to avert flange erosion, and minimizing the risk of failure. Consistently, the inner ring is manufactured from the same alloy as the winding, adhering to the DIN 2699 standard (German) which mandates inner rings in all spiral wound gaskets. Particularly for gaskets with a PTFE filler, ASME B16.20 standards necessitate an inner ring, which is also deemed essential for graphite fillers. This versatile profile is typically utilized in both raised and flat-faced flanges. The robust external ring delivers additional radial strength to prevent gasket blowout and also functions as a compression stop.
