The inner ring shields the sealing element from extreme temperatures and harsh mediums, while filling the void between flanges to avert flange erosion and reduce failure risks. Typically, the inner ring is composed of the same alloy as the winding, adhering to the DIN 2699 German standard which mandates inner rings in all spiral wound gaskets. For gaskets with PTFE fillers, inner rings are required by ASME B16.20 standards and are deemed crucial for graphite fillers. Designed for both raised and flat-faced flanges, the external guide ring not only adds radial strength to prevent blowouts but also functions as a compression stop.
