The strategically inserted inner ring enhances functionality by preventing gasket implosion into the pipe during installation. It safeguards the sealing element from extreme temperatures and aggressive mediums, ensuring longevity and reliability. Additionally, it fills the void between flanges, preventing erosion and significantly reducing failure risks. Adhering to the DIN 2699 standard (German), all spiral wound gaskets incorporate inner rings. For gaskets with PTFE filler, the ASME B16.20 standards necessitate inner rings, which are also crucial for graphite fillers. Ideally suited for raised and flat faced flanges, this configuration also includes an external guide ring that precisely centers the gasket on the flange face, providing extra radial strength to avert blowout and acting as a compression stop. Typically, the outer ring is crafted from carbon steel, treated with paint or zinc plating to prevent corrosion, although alloy versions are available for high-temperature and severe medium applications.
