The addition of an inner ring not only elevates the gasket's overall performance but also ensures precise centering on the flange face with the aid of an external guide ring. This inner ring serves multiple protective functions: it averts the risk of the gasket collapsing into the pipe during installation, shields the sealing element from extreme temperatures and harsh mediums, fills the gap between flanges to thwart erosion, and minimizes the potential of failure. Crafted typically from the same alloy as the winding, the inner ring follows the DIN 2699 standard for all spiral wound gaskets, and is mandated by ASME B16.20 standards when a PTFE filler is used, while also being highly recommended for graphite fillers. This sophisticated profile is ideal for both raised and flat-faced flanges. Furthermore, the external ring enhances radial strength to prevent any blowouts and functions as a compression limiter. It, too, is generally applied in raised and flat-faced flanges, and is commonly constructed from carbon steel—painted or zinc-plated to resist corrosion—but can also be composed of alloys for applications involving higher temperatures and more demanding mediums.
