The inner ring not only prevents implosion into the pipe during installation but also shields the sealing element from extreme conditions. It fills the gap between flanges, preventing erosion and reducing failure risk. Typically, the inner ring is crafted from the same alloy as the gasket winding, adhering to the DIN 2699 German standard which mandates inner rings in all spiral wound gaskets. According to ASME B16.20 standards, inner rings are essential for gaskets with PTFE filler and are highly recommended for graphite fillers. This design is ideal for both raised and flat-faced flanges. The external guide ring offers superior radial strength, preventing blowout and serving as a compression stop. Often made from carbon steel (painted or zinc plated to hinder corrosion), the outer ring can also be manufactured from specialized alloys for high-temperature and severe medium applications.
