It protects the sealing element from extreme temperatures and harsh mediums, fills the void between flanges to prevent flange erosion, and minimizes the risk of failure. German standard DIN 2699 mandates inner rings in all spiral wound gaskets, a requirement echoed by ASME B16.20 standards for gaskets with PTFE filler, and highly recommended for those with graphite fillers.
