It does so by accurately positioning the gasket on the flange face with its external guide ring, ensuring seamless installation. The inner ring, crafted from the same high-quality alloy as the winding, serves multiple purposes: safeguarding the sealing element from extreme temperatures and corrosive mediums, preventing flange erosion by filling voids, and minimizing failure risks. Notably, the German DIN 2699 standard mandates inner rings for all spiral wound gaskets. Inner rings are imperative for gaskets with PTFE filler, as per ASME B16.20 standards, and are highly recommended for those with graphite fillers. This gasket profile is ideally suited for raised and flat-faced flanges. The external ring, providing additional radial strength, acts as a reliable compression stop, preventing gasket blowout. Typically, the outer ring is made of carbon steel with protective coatings, but alloys are available for high-temperature and rigorous medium applications.
