The inner ring, crafted from the same resilient alloy as the winding, serves multiple purposes: it prevents the gasket from collapsing into the pipe during installation, shields the flange from erosion, and substantially reduces the potential for failure. In compliance with the rigorous DIN 2699 (German) standards, all spiral wound gaskets feature inner rings, which are crucial for PTFE-filled gaskets per ASME B16.20 standards, and are highly recommended for graphite fillers.
