The inner ring is meticulously inserted to significantly enhance gasket performance while the external guide ring ensures precise centering on the flange face. The inner ring serves multiple critical functions: it prevents gasket implosion into the pipe during installation, shields the sealing element from extreme temperatures and harsh mediums, fills voids between flanges to prevent erosion, and minimizes the risk of failure. Constructed typically from the same alloy as the winding, the inner ring adheres to the stringent DIN 2699 German standard, demanding inner rings in all spiral wound gaskets. According to ASME B16.20 standards, inner rings are mandatory for gaskets with PTFE fillers and are highly recommended for those with graphite fillers. This design is ideally suited for raised and flat-faced flanges. The external ring provides vital radial strength to prevent blowouts and functions as a compression stop.
