This ring is indispensable, preventing the gasket from collapsing into the pipe during installation, shielding the sealing element from extreme conditions, filling flange voids to avert erosion, and minimizing failure risks. Typically, the inner ring matches the alloy of the winding. Conforming to the DIN 2699 standard, inner rings are mandatory for all spiral wound gaskets and essential for those with PTFE and graphite fillers as per ASME B16.20 standards. This configuration is ideal for raised and flat-faced flanges. An external ring enhances radial strength preventing blowout and serves as a compression limiter. Often crafted from carbon steel (with protective painting or zinc plating to combat corrosion), the outer ring can also be made from superior alloys for high-temperature or harsh environments.
