This remarkable spiral wound gasket features robust solid outer and inner rings, with an additional inner ring meticulously inserted to boost overall gasket performance. This cleverly designed inner ring serves multiple critical functions: it effectively safeguards against the gasket collapsing into the pipe during installation, shields the sealing element from extreme temperatures and harsh mediums, fills gaps between flanges to thwart erosion, and minimizes the risk of failure. Constructed typically from the same alloy as the winding, the inner ring adheres to the DIN 2699 standard (German) which mandates inner rings in all spiral wound gaskets. According to ASME B16.20 standards, inner rings are essential for gaskets with PTFE filler and are considered vital for those with graphite fillers. This gasket profile is commonly applied in both raised and flat-faced flanges. Additionally, the external guide ring plays a pivotal role by offering extra radial strength, preventing gasket blowout, and functioning as a compression stop. Typically crafted from carbon steel, which is either painted or zinc-plated to combat corrosion, the external ring can also be manufactured from alloys to endure higher temperatures and more demanding medium applications.
