This vital inner ring, usually crafted from the same alloy as the winding, is crucial for preventing implosion into the pipe during installation, shielding the sealing component from extreme conditions, and filling the gap between flanges to prevent erosion. Additionally, it significantly reduces the risk of gasket failure. According to the German DIN 2699 standard, inner rings are mandatory in all spiral wound gaskets, a requirement echoed by ASME B16.20 standards for gaskets with PTFE filler, and strongly recommended for those with graphite fillers.
