Enhanced by an inserted inner ring, it boosts gasket performance while an external guide ring ensures precise centering on the flange face. The inner ring's primary role is to prevent gasket implosion into the pipe during installation, safeguard the sealing element from extreme conditions, fill voids between flanges to combat erosion, and minimize failure risks. Crafted typically from the same alloy as the winding, inner rings are specified by the DIN 2699 standard in all spiral wound gaskets. According to ASME B16.20 standards, inner rings are essential for gaskets with PTFE filler and highly recommended for those with graphite fillers. This profile is adeptly suited for both raised and flat-faced flanges. The external ring adds significant radial strength to avert gasket blowout and functions as a compression stop. Often made from carbon steel with anti-corrosive coatings, the outer ring can also be constructed from alloys for high-temperature and demanding medium applications.
