It efficiently centers the gasket on the flange face, preventing any potential implosion into the pipe, and protecting the sealing element from extreme temperatures and aggressive mediums. The inner ring's material typically matches the alloy of the winding, and its inclusion is mandated by the DIN 2699 standard for all spiral wound gaskets.
