It safeguards the sealing element against harsh temperatures and mediums, filling the void between flanges to prevent erosion and minimize failure risks. Typically crafted from the same alloy as the winding, the inner ring adheres to stringent DIN 2699 (German) standards, ensuring durability in all spiral wound gaskets. Following the ASME B16.20 standards, gaskets with PTFE filler require this inner ring, and it holds paramount importance for graphite fillers. Designed for use in raised and flat-faced flanges, the external guide ring provides essential radial strength, preventing gasket blowout and serving as a compression stop. Often composed of carbon steel, which can be painted or zinc plated for corrosion resistance, the outer ring can also be fashioned from alloys to withstand higher temperatures and demanding mediums.
