The incorporation of an inner ring significantly boosts gasket performance, while the external guide ring ensures precise centering on the flange face. This inner ring is crucial in preventing the gasket from imploding into the pipe during installation, safeguarding the sealing element against extreme temperatures and harsh mediums. It efficiently fills the void between flanges, thus preventing flange erosion and minimizing the risk of failure. Typically crafted from the same alloy as the winding, the inner ring adheres to the standards specified by DIN 2699 (German) for all spiral wound gaskets. According to ASME B16.20 standards, inner rings are a necessity for gaskets with PTFE filler and are highly recommended for those with graphite fillers. This design is commonly utilized in raised and flat-faced flanges. Additionally, the external ring delivers extra radial strength to avert gasket blowout and serves as a compression stop.
