The inner ring serves multiple critical functions: it prevents the gasket from collapsing into the pipe during installation, shields the sealing element from extreme temperatures and aggressive mediums, fills the void between flanges to avert erosion, and minimizes failure risks. Typically crafted from the same alloy as the winding, the inner ring adheres to the DIN 2699 German standard, which mandates inner rings for all spiral wound gaskets. According to ASME B16.20 standards, inner rings are compulsory for gaskets with PTFE fillers and are also considered essential for those with graphite fillers. This profile is predominantly utilized in raised and flat-faced flanges. The external ring provides auxiliary radial strength to prevent gasket blowout and functions as a compression stop. Constructed usually from carbon steel (either painted or zinc plated for corrosion resistance), the outer ring can also be fabricated from special alloys for applications involving higher temperatures and more severe mediums.
