The inner ring serves as a vital safeguard, preventing the gasket from collapsing into the pipe during installation, protecting the sealing element from extreme temperatures and harsh mediums, while efficiently filling the void between flanges to thwart flange erosion, thus significantly reducing the risk of failure. Crafted typically from the same alloy as the winding, the inner ring's importance is underscored by the DIN 2699 German standard, which mandates its use in all spiral wound gaskets. Similarly, according to ASME B16.20 standards, inner rings are essential for gaskets with PTFE filler and are highly recommended for graphite fillers.
