The inclusion of an inner ring elevates performance by preventing any risk of implosion into the pipe upon installation, safeguarding the sealing element from extreme conditions, and filling the void between flanges to thwart erosion. Additionally, it minimizes potential failure risks. The inner ring, typically crafted from the same alloy as the winding, complies with the DIN 2699 standard, mandating inner rings for all spiral wound gaskets. According to ASME B16.20 standards, the inner rings are essential for gaskets with PTFE fillers and are crucial for those with graphite fillers. Ideally utilized in raised and flat-faced flanges, the external guide ring ensures precise gasket centering on the flange face, delivering enhanced radial strength to prevent blowouts and serving as a compression stop. Commonly, the outer ring is composed of carbon steel, either painted or zinc-plated for corrosion resistance, but can also be made from more resilient alloys for high-temperature and severe medium applications.
